How I Moved My Blog From Wordpress
I know … I know what you are thinking .. why is this posted on a food blog .. but here is the reason why i decided to post this page … Its because it took me hell to figure out how to shift from wordpress.com without loosing my content … Its actually a very simple thing to do .. and all is done in a click .. but the weird thing is that the information of how to do it is very hard to get .. if at all available … and trust me after reading this .. you might be encouraged to move from wordpress.com yourself … and dont worry no HTML is needed .. and even after shifting .. you would still post the same way as you did in wordpress.com … the only difference is that you will be using wordpress.org .. which allows you to change your blog the way you want … and you arent resticted by the wordpress.com rules … so you can post ads of all types .. and have your own domain … and not loose your content … what could be better
So the simple thing behind all this is to find a hosting company … there are many if you look online … but i found one that is cheap and good at the same time .. its called www.hostican.com … this offered me a free domain .. and a 30% discount … and wordpress can be installed on it in a click … the only thing about it is that the minimum amount of time that you can choose it as a hosting company is 12 months … but that wasnt at all an issue for me .. as im not planning to stop anytime soon
….
So after you choose a hosting company (make sure it has wordpress as an option or it will be more difficult for you to install it) but im describing the hostican way .. as thats the one i tried.. so anyway …they send to you a Control Panel link (to your email) .. with it you will have a user name and a password … so you log into the cPanel (control panel) .. and enter the user name and password … then under the software/services box … you will find a smiley face button called Fantastico De Luxe … click it .. and choose wordpress … and install it … and all the work is done … now go to your blog with the link that Fantastico left for you … and you are done … you now have wordpress on your domain …
Now to move your content from the old wordpress to the new wordpress (the one with you own domain) … all you need to do is log into your old wordpress.com account.. then go to the dashboard … then on the right side … click Tools … then click Export … and download your blog into your PC .. it only takes few seconds and dont worry the file isnt as big as you imagin it to be … Anyway .. after you export your content … then go into your new website … to the dashboard .. then tool .. and import all the content … so now you have everything in you new blog … everything from posts to comments and pages …
Simple right … Well i hope this helps .. and if you decide on using hostican (its a good hosting company .. and has a good after sales service)… and have any questions … feel free to post a comment

Are you serious !?!? – its that simple? and here we were going crazy trying to figure everything out!
Thanx for the info – will definitely help everyone – esp people who have been going crazy searching on the net for ways to do so!
Great work!
Thanx Aalavi … it really is very simple to do … if you need any more info let me know
[...] and i will make sure your link is shifted too … if you are interested in knowing how i shifted my blog … simply visit it [...]
I checked out Hostican and it’s more expensive. For my domain (www.abidhasan.com) I am using GoDaddy, and their service is cheaper.
Sure GoDaddy doesn’t offer unlimited domains, but one thing they have that i need is PHP version 4, which isnt offered by hostican.
i know hostican isnt the cheapest on the market but its very reliable one … i researched alot be4 choosing it … and i believe a few bucks is worth it .. and trust me with the 30% discount and the other offers it has … it might even be close to your offer … and i dunno about the PHP4 but it offers PHP5 … the market for these stuff is very wide now a days .. so i guess each can find a hosting company according to there needs
.. but this is my recommendation
Very interesting article, i have bookmarked your blog for future referrence. Best regards
Thank you ForexBear … if you need more info let me know … stay in touch

Thanks Laila for posting this info about moving your blog. I’ve only been blogging for a couple of weeks and it’s all new to me. I’m interested in generating a bit of cash flow (through ads for starters), but don’t think this is allowed on wordpress. Is there much money to made from having ads on your blog?
You are right … wordpress doesn’t allow ads .. as it posts its own ads ….. so you will have to move your blog if you want to use ads … some people choose blogger and blogspot which are free and allow ads … but if you wanna go professional about it … buy your own domain … and if you only want simple thing .. then go with blogspot … and if you are aiming to make money using your blog … my advice would be get good traffic first … thats the most important thing when doing anythin on the web … it can be profitable when done right
… let me know if you have any more questions … and stay in touch

Hi Laila, I’ve moved my recipes to another blog (website posted above). I decided on Blogger (blogspot) and will be looking into Google Adsense for ads shortly. Thought I’d make the move now, while everything is still in baby stages. The creative stuff is still on the old website http://jacquiwithacq.wordpress.com (for now). Thanks for your advice
Cheers

Just wanted to let you know that I used this post to help guide me thru making my new site. It was slightly different as I am getting it hosted through GoDaddy, but as the days went by things got easier and easier. So thank you!

Hi Laila. What counts as good traffic? Is 5,000 hits a month worth looking at ads?
Hay Eric … well 5000 a month thats approximately 170 a day …that isnt that much … you should try to raise your traffic …. there are many ways of doing that ….added to that it depends on the type of viewers you have … and if you already have your own domain with a hosting company .. then might as well start as you have nothin to loose .. but dont overload you site with ads .. as it can be frustrating for the reader … and then you can keep building your traffic from there …. i hope this help … if you need any more info .. feel free to email me
thnx for the tip laila..
Thanks!!
Glad I could help

Thanks for visiting my site and for sharing your yummy recipes!
I am still in baby steps with a blog…what makes people change to their own domain name? Is it the freedom? Is it the fact that they want to make money?
Thanks
Well there are many reasons to be honest …. but mine were firstly to get more freedom and control over my own blog as alot isnt allowed in wordpress (not talking about the ads yet) … then getting your own domain makes it easier for search engines to find you (it is easier to find lailablogs.com than lailablogs.wordpress.com) so this means more traffic .. but ofcourse its alot of work to get the the amount of traffic you need … now about the money and the ads if thats only what you aim for then you can go for blogger.com .. its free and allows ads … as if you are using your own domain … it will take you a while to set up your blog and get the amount of traffic you need .. then only will you be able to make profit out of it ..
my advice to you would be research alot and see what you aim for your blog … if you intend for it to be only a personal one .. then stay with wordpress … if you are aiming to make it professional and maybe make money of it on the long run .. then go for your own domain …
Hope all this helps .. if you have any more questions feel free to ask … and stay in touch
Thanks, very interesting
